いただきます!/itadakimasu/ Let’s eat
On the third episode of “You ate what?!” I’ve tried an Australian staple food. Can you guess what it is? No its not koala or kangeroo! I don’t eat all the animals, just the delicious ones. I’ll give you a hint. Its “a dark brown Australian food paste made from leftover brewers’ yeast extract with various vegetable and spice additives.” Thank you wikipedia. You’re always there when I need you.
Anywho, have you guessed it yet? Ok. Have a look.
I’d seen various people try it online and on tv shows over the years. I expected to hate it. It smells like…hmm. I don’t think that you can compare that smell to anything. I will say that its not a very welcoming smell. Carly, the Aussie I work with, has a jar sitting on her desk at all times. She bought bread and offered to make me a sandwhich. On one slice of bread there was butter and on the other a thin coating of vegemite.
It was pretty good. Japanese bread is kind of sweet so the salty and buttery combination worked well. I say “good” because it wasn’t bad. I wouldn’t buy any vegemite to eat on a daily basis. But if I was starving I wouldn’t pass it up if it was offered to me.
御馳走様(でした)!/Gochisou sama (deshita)/Thank you for the delicious meal!
Ahhhh! The infamous vegemite.
