You ate what?! [Episode 8]

いただきます!/itadakimasu/ Let’s eat

On the eighth episode of “You ate what?!” we visit a cafe here in Himeji. I’d never heard of this cafe prior to yesterday’s visit. Chelli san mentioned it. And while I am absolutely the trillest, most hardest rapper that ever kilt (killed) the game, I like all the frilly stuff too. I’m down to try all the cute little cafes. I am building a list. The foremost destination on my list is called the Pink Holiday Cafe. But I’ll post more on that later.

This cafe was the epitome of “kawaii” culture. Kawaii is the quality of cuteness in Japanese culture. Everything was was pink! Including the entrance, tables, chairs, everything! You walk in and immediately hear Japanese singing. We discovered that it was a dvd of a Hello Kitty musical that you could watch while enjoying your treats.

It’s been raining in Himeji so I thought a cup of tea would be nice. Thank God for pictures. We were able to determine what we wanted based on the pictures displayed on the menus. We chose the Matcha Set/Green tea set. It came with a cute mug of matcha tea and a bowl of goodness.

I’ve added this cafe visit to this episode of “You ate what?!” because I have only a slight clue as to what was inside that bowl. Of a few things I am sure. There was matcha/green tea ice cream and the sticks reminded me of the wafer rolls you can buy in the states. They were filled with chocolate. Underneath all this was Cornflakes! No joke. There was cereal at the bottom of the bowl. The whip cream is obvious but beyond that I have no clue.

I thought it would be fun for you to guess what the rest of the items were. Here are some clues. The pink, white and green balls were flavorless and reminded me of mochi/rice cakes. Those gelatinous cubes were the most difficult to place. They were more solid than jello but not as firm as gummy bears. They were also flavorless. The brown was a powdered jelly thing that actually tasted pretty good. There was a hint of nuttiness that reminded both Chelli and I of something we’d eaten Stateside but couldn’t place.

All that said, I really enjoyed this treat. I will frequent this cafe. If for no other reason than to see their seasonal decorations and to drink tea from the cutest tea set. The mystery bowl was good.

10/10 will eat again. Even without knowing what it all is.
