いただきます!/itadakimasu/ Let’s eat
Today we flash back to a recent road trip from Himeji to Kagoshima. On this trip I ate lots of new things. But this particular delicacy sticks out in my memory. Can you guess what it is?
If you guessed fish then you one smart cookie. Yes, it is fish. But what kind of fish. If you know anything about these “You ate what?!” posts then you know that I wouldn’t even write about it if it wasn’t strange.
Think of all the strangest fish that you wouldn’t eat and start there.
I’ll give you a few hints. It usually lives in ponds. People love to feed them. Go to any Japanese garden and you’ll see them swimming around looking for humans to feed them. They are beautiful. Colorful.
Maybe you have guessed it correctly by now. I feel bad saying this.
Drum roll please!
It’s Koi carp.
Yes, I said Koi.
I’m gonna be completely honest with you. It was bony. Dipped in soy sauce it was ‘meh’ on a scale of delicious to disappointing. There’s a reason we don’t eat these things.
2/10 won’t try again.
馳走様(でした)!/Gochisou sama (deshita)/Thank you for the delicious meal!
